Kidnapped from Roman England and brought to Ireland as a teen as a slave, he returned as an adult and introduced Christianity to Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day came to the United States with the immigration of settlers from Ireland in the late 1700s and has evolved from celebrating the Saint’s feast day to celebrating Irish heritage and culture. Today, celebrations can be found in almost every part of the United States, with the most prominent being in Chicago and Boston.
